The building opened in 1928 as the Hotel Mark Twain and spent the next century at the centre of the city's life — jazz clubs, theatre crowds, and a stretch as one of the Tenderloin's residential hotels. It reopened in 2025 as the Tilden, named for the deaf Chicano sculptor Douglas Tilden, whose monuments still stand across San Francisco.
Today it holds 119 guest rooms, a Mexican restaurant and bar, a French patisserie, 2,000 square feet of event space, and a penthouse with its own rooftop.
