A Brief History of Tilden Hotel

Opened in 1928

Originally built as the Linden Hotel in 1928, the building was later renamed the Hotel Mark Twain during the Great Depression. Inspired by the iconic American writer, humorist, and lecturer, the name honored Mark Twain’s connection to San Francisco, where he worked for several newspapers in the 1860s.

Though the quote, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” is often attributed to Twain, it remains unconfirmed. However, Twain’s affection for the city is well documented: “I fell in love with the most cordial and sociable city in the Union,” he wrote. “I have always been rather better treated in San Francisco than I actually deserved.”

Billie Holiday & Room 203

In the late 1940s, the hotel gained notoriety when legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday was arrested in Room 203 for possession of opium. Though she was later acquitted, the event earned the hotel a place among the “Top Ten Famous Hotel Rooms” in American history.

Renovated & Reimagined

In 2017, the Hotel Mark Twain underwent a full transformation and was reintroduced as the Tilden Hotel, named in honor of renowned California sculptor Douglas Tilden. His celebrated works include Admission Day, Mechanic’s Monument, and The Ball Player in Golden Gate Park.

Now in 2025, under new ownership, the hotel has recently undergone another thoughtful renovation—preserving its historic charm while embracing a fresh, modern spirit. The Tilden continues to honor local artists and creatives, inspired by its namesake’s artistic legacy.
